First-year students at Lappeio Junior High School of Naousa took part in educational workshops delivered by EduQuest as part of the European EITIC-EU project. The students examined the central square of Naousa and proposed changes that could make it safer, more comfortable and more accessible to everyone.
During the workshops, the students learned about women who have distinguished themselves in science, technology, engineering, the arts, mathematics and urban planning. Their stories demonstrated how knowledge, creativity and thoughtful design can improve everyday life in cities.
One of the female role models presented was Jane Jacobs, a writer and activist who influenced modern approaches to urban planning. Jacobs opposed the demolition of historic neighbourhoods in New York City to make way for motorways. She also highlighted the importance of pavements, parks, trees and public spaces that bring people closer together.
Inspired by these female role models, the students were divided into groups and took part in a creative challenge. Each group was asked to answer the following question: “If you had the opportunity to redesign the central square of Naousa, what would you change?”
The students proposed additional access ramps, safe pedestrian crossings, shelters, comfortable seating, public drinking fountains and improved lighting. At the same time, they emphasised the importance of preserving the square’s large trees.
Their proposals also included infrastructure for electric bicycles and a music stage for cultural events. Through the activity, the students identified the needs of their local community, worked collaboratively and designed solutions for a more functional and inclusive public space.
The EITIC-EU project aims to inspire and educate students, particularly girls aged 10 to 16, about the importance of science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics (STEAM). By showcasing female role models and developing innovative educational resources, the initiative seeks to promote equality, challenge stereotypes and empower young girls to pursue their own paths in STEAM fields.
