EduQuest in Genoa: New Horizons in STEAM Education with a Focus on Female Empowerment

With a mission to bridge the gender gap in science and spark innovation in education, the EduQuest team successfully completed its training expedition in Genoa, Italy. Hosted at the Scuola di Robotica, a European center of excellence, this initiative was part of the EITIC-EU project.

Joined by partners from Italy, Spain, and Greece (including the 1st EPAL of Ymittos), we focused on mastering new methodologies that blend Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM).

A core pillar of the program was highlighting iconic women as role models. Participants learned how to weave the stories of pioneers like astronaut Ellen Ochoa, computer scientist Grace Hopper, and urbanist Jane Jacobs into their teaching. Through workshops like the “Grace Hopper Debug Dash”, we explored ways to inspire girls to claim their space in traditionally male-dominated fields.

Learning by Doing The program went far beyond theory, featuring intensive, hands-on workshops such as:

“Pitch Perfect Planet”: Building skills to present environmental solutions.
“Mission Possible”: Solving complex problems using technology.
“Dream Up Your City Block”: Modeling urban interventions based on inclusion and sustainability.

Naoussa as a Case Study: Green Design & Inclusion In the practical segment of the “Dream Up Your City Block” workshop, Naoussa—and specifically its central square—served as the primary case study. Recognizing local climate conditions (intense sunshine, air currents), our working groups developed proposals along two key axes:

Greening & Microclimate: Inspired by Kate Orff’s philosophy of “designing with nature,” we proposed transforming the square into a friendlier ecosystem. Ideas included creating natural shading zones with trees (“playground under the trees”) to lower temperatures and make the space more accessible and pleasant, especially during the hot summer months.
Accessibility Without Exclusions: Guided by Jane Jacobs’ vision for lively and safe neighborhoods, we prioritized the movement of people with disabilities. We proposed gentle interventions to slow down vehicle traffic and create safe pathways for pedestrians, ensuring the city is welcoming to the elderly, parents with strollers, and those with mobility challenges.

EduQuest is committed to bringing this knowledge back to the educational community of Naousa with a dual purpose: to inspire more girls to pursue science and technology, and to teach students how to design solutions with empathy. For us, a “smart city” isn’t just digital; it is a city that respects the environment and, above all, has room for everyone, without exclusions.

EduQuest Releases a New Methodological Handbook to Advance Inclusive STEAM Education

Within the framework of our European initiative EITIC-EU, we created a Methodological Handbook aimed at strengthening the participation of girls aged 10–16 in STEAM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics).

Despite the rapid digital transformation of our society, women remain significantly underrepresented in key technology sectors. Across the European Union, women account for only 18.7% of STEM professionals, highlighting the urgent need for targeted, structured and early educational interventions.

Based on a comparative European study, the handbook translates shared findings and good practices into aν adaptable and creative pedagogical framework. It adopts a “Learning by Doing” approach, equipping educators and organisations with concrete tools and activities designed to build confidence, creativity and active engagement among girls.

Special emphasis is placed on the use of digital tools and on the design of both in-person and online activities, including talks and workshops featuring female role models from science and technology. The handbook aims to challenge gender stereotypes and connect learning experiences with real-world career pathways.

Designed as an open-access resource, the handbook is addressed to educators, schools and organisations across Europe committed to promoting equity, inclusion and innovation in STEAM education.

EITIC-EU: Naoussa at the heart of Europe for equality in the education of young girls in Research & Technology fields

On May 28 and 29, 2025, the second transnational meeting of partners of the European project “EITIC-EU – Fostering STEAM careers among schoolgirls through women role-models,” in which the EduQuest organization from Naoussa participates. The project, co-funded by the Erasmus+ program, aims to promote gender equality in the field of technology and science by encouraging girls aged 10–16 to pursue STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics).

During the meeting, partners from Spain, Italy, Belgium, Romania, and Greece exchanged experiences and coordinated the next steps of the project, including the creation of educational material, the promotion of female role models in education, and the implementation of local educational interventions in schools.

EduQuest’s participation in the EITIC-EU project ensures that the voice of rural areas such as Naoussa is heard in the European dialogue on educational equality, strengthening the connection of local schools with innovative pedagogical practices. The local implementation of the project is carried out in collaboration with the Naoussa Robotics Academy.

EITIC-EU: New European ERASMUS+ project in Naoussa by EDUQUEST on empowering girls in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM)

The EITIC-EU project, a new and innovative European initiative that aims to encourage girls aged 10-16 to explore STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) fields, is being launched in Naoussa. By seeking out and promoting successful female role models and creating innovative educational tools, the project aims to break down stereotypes and open up new horizons for girls in research and technology.

In Greece, the project will be implemented in Athens and Naoussa. In Naoussa, the project will be implemented by EduQuest in collaboration with the Naoussa Robotics Academy and the “Naoumidou” Educational Center, bringing girls closer to new technologies and boosting their confidence to pursue scientific and technological careers. In Athens, the project will be implemented by the 1st EPAL Ymittou.

The project is a partnership between organizations and educational institutions from Spain, Belgium, Romania, Italy, and Greece. The project will last 24 months, is co-funded by the Erasmus+ Program in the adult education category (KA220 SCH), and is coordinated by the Fundación Cibervoluntarios organization from Spain.

The kick-off meeting of the project took place in Madrid, Spain, on January 29 and 30, 2025, where representatives of the organizations participating in the project exchanged views and strategies for strengthening the presence of women in the fields of research and technology. Some of the most important messages that emerged from the meeting were that engaging in research and technology can provide women with confidence and independence, is creative, has the potential to bring about significant changes in society, and is now everywhere, from the culinary arts to the way we walk and talk!

Although the project has only just begun, the main results that will be produced in the coming months are:

Recognition of female role models in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) through interviews and storytelling by successful women.
Creation of educational materials tailored for teachers and students, highlighting the successes and contributions of women in STEAM.
Organization of educational workshops and competitions where girls can experiment, innovate, and acquire valuable skills.

EITIC-EU aims to create a more inclusive and encouraging environment, promoting gender equality and opening doors for more girls to enter the exciting world of STEAM!
